Notes on Western Air Express

On july 26, 1930, a merger between Transcontinental Air Transport (TAT) and Western Air Express (WAE) was made, bringing the formation of Transcontinental & Western Air, Inc. The assets of TAT and WAE were transfered to T&WA. However, there were some assets that were retained by WAE and these were the route between Salt Lake City to Los Angeles and a few other smaller routes. Also the existing WAE subsiduaries which were Standard Air Lines, Mid-Continent Air Express, West Coast Airlines were retained. WAE ended 1930 with financial losses and General Motors bought control of the airline. As a result of the Air Mail Act of 1934, WAE organized (name changed) General Air Lines. General Motors sold its holdings in WAE. The new management reverted to its old name of Western Air Express on December 29, 1934. The airline changed its name to Western Air Line on March 11, 1941 which it kept until WAL merged with Delta Air Lines on April 1, 1987.
